Language can be learned, but language can not be taught. The job of a teacher should be to teach the adult student how to learn alone without a teacher, basically how to become an independent learner. But unfortunately nobody's teaching that on whatever platforms or language schools. Nobody goes to language classrooms to learn about how to learn, and the teachers don't tell the students what works and what doesn't, either.
There's no benefit in speaking for the sake of speaking. I say "no benefit", but even I want to say "zero" because it's just so inefficient. Especially that people pay to practice their speaking makes no sense in my opinion.
It's so intuitive to think that we learn to speak by speaking, which I used to believe in that, too. In order to speak, you have to speak. No! In order to speak, you should have to get knowledge. The reason why people can't speak English well is because they don't acquire knowledge in the language and they haven't learned any other subjects in the language. Vocabulary and grammar are not proper knowledge, which to language is just like glossaries and footnotes to a book.
If you just want to learn how to order food at a restaurant, you just need a phrasal book. You don't need to pay for Cambly or any of these language schools. You just buy the food by saying "Coffee, please." for example. People have survived without Cambly for dozens of centuries.
My point is learning how to order food is not what people mean by speaking. The problem is that people associate language with speaking, but language is about understanding, namely understanding what you read and listen to.
